Fog over the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills

Windows and Bi-Fold Doors in Los Gatos

Hillside homes, older downtown cottages and big openings that want a careful measure. We work Los Gatos from the San Jose showroom on Lewis Road.

Los Gatos

Foothill homes, bigger spans, fewer standard sizes

Los Gatos sits against the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the houses reflect it: custom builds on sloped lots, mid-century ranches, and older cottages near downtown and Almond Grove. Openings here are more often wide, tall or non-standard, which is why Los Gatos is where we see the most requests for bi-fold and multi-slide patio walls.

Housing stock and what it means for windows

Los Gatos mixes hillside custom homes, mid-century ranch stock, and older cottages close to downtown. Many hillside houses have been remodeled more than once, so frames can be out of square and wall depths can differ from one side of the house to the other. Measuring at the house matters far more than working from a phone photo of the window.

Exposure and orientation

Winter storms arrive from the south-southwest, and a hillside opening with little overhang takes them head-on. A canyon-facing lot can see afternoon sun and driving rain on the same wall. Flush sills and deep glass walls need overhang and drainage figured out before the order goes in.

South Bay winter weather arrives from the south-southwest. That only decides a sill when the opening has little overhang.

Local notes

Things worth knowing before you order

Steep and tight access

Large glass on a hillside lot can be hard to get to the opening. We plan how a unit will physically arrive and be set before the order is placed, not on install day.

Wildfire-area glazing

Parts of the Los Gatos hills sit in wildfire-designated zones where building codes can call for specific glazing, such as tempered glass. We flag this early and confirm what your building department needs.

Design review near downtown

Older and historic areas can come with design guidelines. If your house is in one, we help you pick a series and frame color that respects the existing look.

Out-of-square openings

On older remodeled work the opening often is not what the plans say. A measure at the house catches this before the glass is built.

About Los Gatos

Los Gatos was incorporated in 1887 and is a town rather than a city, set where Los Gatos Creek leaves the foothills. Highway 17 runs through it toward Santa Cruz, and the Los Gatos Creek Trail links downtown with Vasona Lake County Park.

The result is a town with a compact walkable center and a long edge of hillside homes. We treat those as two different jobs.

Do you have a showroom in Los Gatos?

No. The showroom is at 180 Lewis Rd in San Jose. Los Gatos jobs are measured at your house, specified from the showroom, and installed by our crews.

Can you install bi-fold or multi-slide doors on a hillside home?

Yes. These are some of our most common Los Gatos jobs. Slope, access and the sill detail get planned before the order. See our bi-fold doors page for the options.

Do wildfire zone rules affect my windows?

They can. Some Los Gatos hillside parcels fall in areas where codes specify glazing such as tempered glass. We ask about your location early and confirm requirements with your building department.

Will a window replacement change how my house looks from the street?

It does not have to. We match frame color, grid pattern and sightlines to the house, which matters most on older homes and anywhere design review applies.

How is pricing different here?

Los Gatos jobs often carry wider spans, specialty series and more difficult access than a flat-lot retrofit. We quote from the measured opening and the line you choose, not from a zip-code markup.

What areas near Los Gatos do you serve?

We also work in Saratoga, Campbell, San Jose, and across the South Bay. See the full list on our service areas page, or call (408) 227-7777 if your address is on the edge.
